
Aaliyah, which means “highest, most exalted one” in Swahili, is already making quite a name for herself in the music industry. At the young age of twenty-one, Aaliyah has already recorded/released two solo albums, has been featured in a few movie soundtracks and has starred in one major motion picture. Aaliyah moved to Detroit with her family when she was five years old, although she was born in Brooklyn, NY, on January 16,1979 as Aaliyah Haughton. Aaliyah’s biggest fan was her mother, and before Aaliyah was even registered in elementary school, her mother had hired her a voice teacher. Her early school years were spent performing in school plays and auditioning for several TV shows/commercials. At age nine she was featured on TV’s Star Search and at age eleven her blossoming creative skills secured her a five-night project singing with Gladys Knight’s troupe in Las Vegas.
