His second album, Mad Season, released in 2000, the letters in the top three on the Billboard 200 and was certified 4 x platinum in the United States. His third album, More than you think you are, released in 2002, was certified double platinum in the United States. However, was not as successful as the previous two albums, despite their singles to be released significantly.

The band went on hiatus in 2004, and guitarist Adam Gaynor left the band in 2005 after performing in the studio albums of the first three. As a result, Paul Doucette took over rhythm guitar and the band re-united and released a compilation album, Exile on Mainstream in 2007, which was certified gold in America. Matchbox Twenty is currently in recess and its members are focusing on solo work. However, the band did play together on 1 January 2011 and said they are currently working on a new record.

Rob Thomas was born on a military base in Germany and raised in southeast-tuned the skills of composition, while in front of several local bands in his high school years (which lists artists such as Van Morrison, Elvis Costello, Al Green and REM as influences). While enjoying the local scene, Thomas was introduced in matchbox20 drummer Paul Doucette and bassist Brian Yale. After playing together for several years in bands and touring regionally, the trio (Thomas, Doucette and Yale) decided to start a new band that would become matchbox20. After recruiting the talents of Adam Gaynor from Criteria Recording Studios in Miami and Kyle Cook from Atlanta Institute of Music, the lineup is complete.

The band quickly joined forces with producer Matt Serletic, who co-produced the album Collective Soul, and began tracking demonstrations. It was not long before the project attracted attention from both coasts. And soon matchbox20 was added to the Lava / Atlantic list. The band wasted no time and headed back to Serletic studio to record their debut album, you or someone like you.
