Born in Autlan de Navarro, Jalisco (Mexico), July 20, 1947. His father was a violinist in a mariachi band, and young Carlos learned the violin, but switched to guitar when he was eight. In 1955 his family moved to Tijuana, Santana began playing in clubs and bars in the tourist area. He remained in Tijuana when his family moved again, this time to San Francisco, California, but soon followed.

In 1966, he helped found the Santana Blues Band, eventually shortened to Santana. The band began playing at the Fillmore West, where many of the great San Francisco bands played.
