A performer from birth, Britney Jean Spears was born on December 2, 1981 in Kentwood, Louisiana. She began singing at her local church at the age of four and made her first professional debut at the age of eight. Britney flew to Atlanta, GA to audition for the Disney Channel’s Mickey Mouse Club, and although she was considered too young for the show at that time, she impressed the show’s producer and he helped her to get an agent in New York. The next three summers found Britney in New York City studying at the off-Broadway Dance Center and at the Professional Performing Arts School. Apparently, such schooling gave Britney a strong creative foundation, and in 1991 she was featured in the off-Broadway production Ruthless.
Britney finally received her mouse ears at age eleven and stayed on with the show for the 1993 and 1994 seasons. The show was then canceled and Britney returned to Georgia where she attended high school there for a year. However, her urge to sing was so strong, Britney once a gain gravitated back to the Big Apple. An executive at JIVE heard one of her demo tapes and signed her onto a development deal with famous producer, Eric Foster White. Britney’s first album for JIVE was finished in 1998.
In the fall of 1998, Britney staged a three month promotional tour through the malls of America—she was warmly welcomed by her audiences and helped earn Britney a job opening for N’Sync through January 1999. On January 12, 1999, Baby, One More Time was made available to the public and Britney quickly became No. 1
on the Billboard Charts—at the ripe old age of seventeen. Although Britney and her parents have received criticism for allowing their daughter to move to New York City at such a young age, Britney maintains that even though her parents were her biggest supporters, the decision was fully her own.
This upcoming year will definitely be one filled with a busy promotional schedule as well a return to TV, as Britney has a guest part on WB’s Dawson’s Creek. Music will always be her main priority, Britney has stated, and as for those who want to consider her a one/two hit wonder, Britney says that she plans on staying in the business for a long time to come!
